Level 3 Apprenticeships For Your Setting

The best Level 3 you'll ever hire is already on your rota.

With a Level 3 childcare apprenticeship, you could have a qualified Early Years Educator in as little as 8 months, counting in your ratios.

Why build your own Level 3s?

35,000additional staff needed (NFER)
74% fewerapplicants per vacancy since 2019
44%annual staff turnover, up from 24% in 2019

And here's the part you can change: only 49% of early years workers feel they have a route to progress. A funded Level 3 gives your team that route, and gives them a reason to stay with you.

New for November 2026

How long the new Level 3 takes

8 months

About 11 off-the-job hours a week

Start15 months

Under the revised Level 3 Early Years Educator standard, for anyone starting on or after 1 November 2026. Prior learning can shorten it.

What's changing

  • Assessment can take place during the programme as well as at the end
  • Gateway to completion replaces gateway
  • You, the employer, verify their behaviours

What stays the same

  • A full and relevant Level 3 qualification
  • It counts in ratios
  • Protected off-the-job time
  • Regular reviews every 8 to 10 weeks

Employer tip: Build Paediatric First Aid into their plan from day one. They need a full PFA certificate to count in ratios at Level 3.

  • The problem: one resignation can close a room, and you can't always win on pay.
  • The fix: government funding covers up to 95% of training for the team you have, and 100% for eligible 16 to 24s. Eligibility applies.
  • Next step: a free 15-minute call to check what your setting qualifies for.
What one resignation really costs

One Level 3 hands in her notice. The cost lands in three places.

Your rota

Cover you didn't budget for

Agency staff, overtime and, when the ratios won't stretch, a room you can't open. One departure can run past £5,000.

Your children

A key person gone overnight

Toddlers who'd just settled start again with someone new. Observations and next steps go on hold while the room simply copes.

Your parents and Ofsted

Quality people can see

Parents notice unfamiliar faces at drop-off. Inspectors notice when interactions and your curriculum lose their depth.

You can't stop people leaving. You can make sure someone's ready to step up.

Most nurseries already have that person on the rota. They just aren't qualified yet, and government funding can cover their training. Eligibility applies.

Grow your own

The best Level 3 you'll ever hire is already on your rota.

They know your children, families and routines. Qualifying them keeps that continuity, and it's often quicker and cheaper than recruiting.

  1. Level 2 Early Years Practitioner

Safeguarding, the EYFS and learning through play, practised in your rooms.

Counts in ratios at Level 2
  2. Level 3 Early Years Educator

Plans from observations and leads a key group. As little as 8 months from 1 November 2026.

    Counts as your Level 3
  3. Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner

Leads a room, mentors newer staff and shapes your curriculum.

Your next room leader or deputy

It works for whoever you need to qualify:

Better for children, too. Key person relationships stay intact, practice stays consistent from baby room to pre-school, and tutors coach on your floor, so new learning goes straight into interactions.
